Economy Minister, Hellenic Seaplanes discuss development of routes

Among the issues discussed in the meeting were the licensing of waterways and the construction of suitable infrastructure that will allow seaplanes to reach remote parts of the country.

The main focus of the meeting that was held between Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism Minister George Stathakis and the management of Hellenic Seaplanes was the development of the seaplanes’ sector and the building of waterways throughout the country, the company announced on Friday.

Among the issues discussed in the meeting were the licensing of waterways and the construction of suitable infrastructure that will allow seaplanes to reach remote parts of the country, mainly islands without airports.

During the meeting, Stathakis reiterated the government’s intention to support the operation of seaplanes throughout the country.

He highlighted the multiple benefits for Greek islands, such as the job creation, networks development, the positive effects on tourism and the boosting of domestic industry.

The idea of launching seaplane routes have been headlined for more than a decade now, with either redtape or financial viability issues always standing in the way.
