European Council President Tusk tries to persuade Cyprus on Turkey-refugee crisis in visit to island’s capital

France and UK also toughen stance towards Turkey on refugee issue

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk is scheduled to land in Cyprus on an official visit, Tuesday in an effort to persuade the Cypriot government to ease up on its harsh stance towards the prospect of the EU opening up EU accession chapters for Turkey. Tusk will meet with the President of the Cypriot Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis and the country’s Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides to explore the possibilities of whether the Cypriot government would be willing to accept the opening new accession chapters for Turkey to achieve Turkey’s cooperation on the refugee crisis in return. The Cypriot side is holding a tough stance on the demands put on the table by Turkey, to be discussed during the March 18 EU28 Summit on the refugee issue, if Cyprus’s demands are not met. Meanwhile, both the UK and France are also taking a more strict stance on Turkey concerning the refugee crisis, with French President Francois Hollande calling Turkey’s demands ‘unreasonable’ in exchange for controlling the refugee flows from her borders.
