The European Union is being prepared for a Brexit and considers various scenarios, while the latest polls conducted show Brexit supporters leading over EU supporters.
If the British government violates the process of its exit of the EU, the country will be threatened with some consequences, including the suspension of its participation in the EU affecting negatively the British economy.
Sources in Brussels expressed the hope that Britain will follow the process, but the EU is being prepared for a chaos scenario.
The right of a state to withdraw from the EU is clearly mentioned in Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. When the state has officially expressed its desire to leave EU, the negotiation phase starts which lasts up to two years.
However, these negotiations will not determine the future relationship of the state that has left EU and the EU, but only the way of its withdrawal. Britain could be forced to leave EU without first having clarified the issue of access to the EU internal market. Therefore, Brexit supporters in the British government are seeking other ways that the country could use to exit EU.
