The latest furor from “Down Under” involves a chic Sydney bar, naked women — actually, panties are seen in the pics — and a buffet table with foods and fruits placed on the … reclining women.
What ensued was a firestorm of controversy and one very, very successful promotional stunt by the proprietors.
The venue in question is Cruise Bar, located in the upscale Circular Quay district.
Protests by local women’s right groups urged a boycott of the bar, decrying what they called the ‘objectifying’ of women at the event on Wednesday, according to the Daily Mail Australia.
“The topless women wore skimpy, flesh-coloured underwear and laid on tables where party-goers could dine from their bodies-turned-dinnerplates,” is how the paper reported the event.
One protester, Melinda Tankard-Reist, said she hoped people would take a stand against the bar for ‘objectifying’ women.
‘I hope people decide to boycott Cruise Bar en masse for treating women like trays,’ she was quoted by the newspaper.
Nevertheless, the ensuing social media reactions were close to viral.
‘It’s a job, they accepted it, they are getting paid for it. If they are uncomfortable or don’t like it they could quit,’ tweeted Sandra. ‘No one is forcing anyone to eat the fruit either. Everyone is a grown adult and can make their own decisions on the matter.’
