We welcome the political agreement on the formation of a government of national unity in Libya, which was announced in the early hours of today, from Morocco, by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative, Bernardino Leon.

The positive outcome of the months-long efforts to achieve an agreement among the political forces of Libya is, without a doubt, a very important and positive development that creates the conditions for the further consolidation of stability and peace in the country and in the wider region.

The Libyan people themselves should now encourage and support the spirit of cooperation and responsibility shown by all of the country’s political forces, building on this spirit a new period of reconciliation, stability and prosperity.
