The media of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) has been following developments at the excavation site of Amphipolis with great interest. In fact, they have been trying from the outset to link this amazing find to the name dispute and other bilateral matters in order to use it to their advantage.

However, FYROM media have really gone too far this time. More specifically, “Dnevnik”, a pro-government newspaper, published a front page article entitled “Amateurism and ignorance in US and British media / How the Amphipolis tomb from the Macedonian era came to be called Greek”.

The article goes so far as to accuse British and US media channels, such as BBC, The Washington Post and International Business Times of amateurism and historical ignorance, in relation to their latest reports on the Amphipolis findings.

The article argues that the British and US media “ignorantly characterized the Macedonian tomb as Greek” and notes that although “there have been many opinions regarding the findings, no Greek scientist has ever disputed that it is in fact a “Macedonian tomb”, i.e that a great personality of the Macedonian dynasty has been buried there.

The article goes on to add that “even the Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, who visited the excavation site, said the Macedonian land never ceases to amaze”!

However, in its ludicrous attempt to use the Greek PM’s statements to support FYROM’s so-called historical claim to the tomb of Amphipolis, the article failed to mention the rest of the Prime Minister’s statement, which stressed that the amazing findings at Amphipolis confirm that Macedonia was and will always be Greek.
