German Finance Ministry denies Schauble thinking of resignation

Spiegel interview sparked speculation

The German Finance Ministry denied rumors today in the German media that Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble was considering resigning from his post because of a difference of opinion on the Greek matter with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Rumors were fuelled after Schauble had said in interview to Spiegel that he could always request from the Chancellor to relieve him of his duties. Some German media outlets picked up on that excerpt and speculated on whether Schauble was thinking of stepping down. Der Spiegel added to the rumors by publishing a separate piece entitled “Schauble brings game closer to resignation”.
