Greece’s government body that manages the refugee crisis has been mobilized after it emerged that the family of a 7-year-old Syrian boy who is hospitalized in Germany and urgently needs a bone marrow transplant may be among the thousands of stranded refugees and migrants in Greece.
The story of Rami was even discussed between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel who are in Brussels for the EU-Turkey summit on migration.
Rami was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma five years ago, when the war broke out in Syria. While he was in hospital, his family was displaced from their home in Tadamoun by violence. His father, then, decided to try and get the two of them to Germany via the smuggling routes, so as Rami could get the proper treatment in a hospital.
In Germany, the doctors told his father that the boy’s siblings are potentially the best donors, but they are unable to reach the country because the borders have closed and processing the family could take months.
