The Greek PM’s Office issued a non-paper criticising opposition party New Democracy for hatching a plan to incite social tensions in light of Wednesday’s anti-government demonstration by a movement calling itself ‘Resign’.
In an interview to state broadcaster ERT TV, government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili attacked the protest, scheduled to take place at Syntagma square on Wednesday, dubbing it a ‘hostile move’ towards the country, while Minister of Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Panos Skourletis went even further saying such movements had an undertone of ‘anti-democratic and extreme right logic’.
Gerovasili acknowledged the right of anyone to protest and express their views, but added the ‘Resign’ movement did not represent the needs of Greek society under the current circumstances. She continued by claiming that even though the organisers of the demonstration attempted to avoid being associated with any political party, it was clear that they had the covert support of New Democracy.
