Greek navy vessel sustains tear to side

Accident occurred at Salamis naval station due to strong winds

Newsroom January 24 08:24

The Greek Navy vessel LST Jason type Lesvos L176 was damaged at the Salamis naval station on Tuesday when it crashed into other vessels while trying to dock. According to reports, the accident occurred at around 8 pm last night when the ship attempted to approach the pier but the strong winds flung it onto two other vessels resulting in the ship crashing against the pier. The vessel sustained a 2-metre tear on one side. There are no reports of injuries to the Lesvos crew members, but the damage it sustained by will force it to be inactive for weeks until the large lateral tear is repaired. The incident casts serious doubts on the readiness of the Greek navy.
