Pablo Picasso’s Guernica showed the suffering of the Spanish civil war in 1937. It was the artist’s response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, that was bombarded by German and Italian planes at the request of Spanish Nationalists.

Cartoonist Jovco Savov has taken the iconic work to show that nothing much has changed… only the faces and the transfer of pain and the stench of death to the sea.

Picasso’s Guernica is believed to have helped bring worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War, but times have changed and it’s hard to imagine that Savov’s Guernica will do the same. Or will it?
