Lagarde on Greece: We will discuss with any newly formed government

“We always think of those in real need” - “ I am aware about the human cost of the IMF program in Greece”

Newsroom January 15 10:31

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Christine Lagarde said that once stability prevails following the Greek elections on January 25, the IMF would pursue everything already talked about with the Greke authorities for a sustainable economy. She made this response after a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington on Thursday on the subject of the global economy in 2015 after she was asked a question about Greece.

Ms. Lagarde also noted that “Greece, like other countries needs structural reforms in order to create conditions for a suitable environment for investment”. She added that “the relationship with Europe is definitely on better and stronger grounds, due to changes in the European context.”

Furthermore, the IMF Deputy Manager stated that she is aware about the human cost of the IMF program in Greece.

“When we design reforms that we feel that they are necessary to restore the position of a country, we always take in account the poor people and the safety net needed,” concluded Ms Lagarde.
