Mario Draghi: No talks on QE for Greece at the moment

Central banker said more details were needed on specifics of measures

The President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi ruled out any prospect of Greece being included in the quantitative easing (QE) programme for the time being. Responding to a question submitted by SYRIZA MEP Nikos Chountis on the sustainability of the Greek debt at the European Parliament, the central banker said the ECB could not issue a full report of the sustainability of the Greek debt before any details on the alleviating measures were available. “We factored in the last EuroGroup meeting, which is the first step towards ensuring the viability of the debt, but the alleviating measures mentioned in the common statement of June 15 were not enough to evaluate their quantitative impact and the effect in public debt of Greece”, he underlined. On the matter of what kind of interest rate Greece could achieve if it borrowed from the markets, Mr. Draghi said that would depend on the growth prospects of the Greek economy.
