A looming meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is definitely on the horizon, yet the exact date and venue remains a question.
Greece’s new radical left leader has already fixed meetings with Matteo Renzi and Francois Hollande, leaving only Germany’s “Iron Lady” without a fixed date, although the most probable venue appears to be on the sidelines of an EU summit in “neutral” Brussels.
The Chancellery in Berlin reportedly wanted the first meeting in the German capital, as a spokeswoman on Monday said Tsipras was more than welcome.
It’s on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels where Tsipras will also meet with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. If “leaks” out of Brussels prove true, the former Luxembourg premier has on at least one one item, namely, the “troika” of EC-ECB-IMF inspectors, agreed with Athens that the institution is dead.
