IMF demands pension cuts up to 30% for pensions over 1,000 euros as well as cuts in minimum wage

Newsroom January 31 11:19

The Greek government will meet with the representatives of the Institutions to start the negotiations on all open issues on Monday, while talks will be carried out in two phases, according to Naftermporiki newspaper citing Finance Ministry’s information.

The first phase will last a few days, as there will be a break at the end of next week and then the institutions will return to complete the negotiation.

In the meantime, IMF’s demands on pension cuts up to 30% for pensions over 1,000 euros as well as cuts in minimum wage are shocking.

According to Kathimerini’s Sunday edition, the head of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, told Alexis Tsipras that she did not approve the Greek proposal for social security reform during the meeting they had in the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to information, she asked for reductions in main pensions, since IMF’s position is that reduction in future pensions are not sufficient.

As the newspaper reports, Alexis Tsipras replied that “we cannot reduce current main pension”.
