Here’s the new home where Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will live with his wife Peristera (Betty) and their two sons. The leap from Harmony Street, in working-class Kypseli, to Maximos Mansion, will be a difficult one. The building was originally founded in 1912 by shipowner Alexandros Michalinos. Michalinos’ widow, having been married to Dimitris Maximos, sold the incomplete building to Leonidas Empeirikos, only to rebuy it in 1921. The home was used during the German Occupation as the Residence of the German Admiral of the Aegean Sea. After the war, it was used as the seat of the U.S. Ambassador to Athens before it was sold by Dimitrios Maximos to the Greek state in 1952 at a fraction of its value.
