Port of Piraeus tops cargo traffic for 2009-2013 term

Bids for buyout of majority share in Port to be submitted by end of October

The International Associations of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) released data indicating that the port of Piraeus recorded the highest percentage increase in container traffic between 2009-2013 among 50 ports worldwide. The Piraeus port had a massive 476 pct rise over the period. More specifically traffic cargo rose from 665,000 TEUs in 2009 to 3,163,000 TEUs in 2013, while it grew further to reach 3,700,000 TUEs in 2014. The port of Duisburg in Germany came second with a 321 percentage increase over the same period, followed by the Chinese port of Dalian (239 pct). Binding bids for a majority stake in the Piraeus Port Organization would be submitted by the end of October, according to sources in the Hellenic Development Fund.
