A hero bitch on the Greek island of Zakynthos, saved the life of her male companion, refusing to leave his side for three days after he was shot 28 times with a poisonous led pellet gun. The 18-month old pointer cross, named Juliet for her devotion to her companion that was left for dead on a ditch, sat beside her 2-year-old Romeo, also a setter cross.
Juliet went without food and barked for three days in order to attarct the notice of passers-by and get help for the dying dog. A hiker finally followed the setter to the place where the dying dog lay with only his head above water. A vet was immediatly alerted so that the dog could be nursed to backe to life.
Rescuers from Zante Strays, the Holbrook Animal Rescue in West Sussex, transfered the duo to Britain to give them a new life. People at the shelter believe that the dogs were friends before the accident as it is very rare for two dogs who don’t know each other to be so close.
Initially, Romeo would have been shipped over without Juliet, but it was hard to part them. In Britain, the two dogs are still close even though there are many others at the shelter they only have eyes for each other.
“We rescue hundreds of dogs and it is rare to get such a bond,” they say at the shelter.
