The president of the Diyarbakir Bar Association, Tahir Elci, was shot in the southeastern province while he was making a statement to the press.

Lawyer Elci, who was a leading Kurdish rights activist, was killed during a shootout.

One policeman was killed whereas three other policemen and journalists were wounded.
