‘Staco’ group preserves street art

The group is involved in recording graffiti in Athens and Bristol

Colouful street art and wall graffiti have become an inseparable part of modern day western metropoles. Walking in the small streets of Athens, a by-passers get the sense that the art painted in public places is speaking out, telling a story, evoking all kinds of emotions and feelings. A group called ‘Staco’, which stands for Street Art Conservators, has assumed the responsibility of preserving these painted stories. Consisting of a group of university students and antiquity conservators, Staco has been around for 4 years and take care of street art by recording it, studying it and preserving it. Currently the group is concerned with the conservation of street art ion Bristol and Athens, hoping to extend their activity in other cities. Two of the group’s members, Eleftheria Mavromati and Calliope Oreianou say the group’s main goal is to document and record the pieces of art and try to preserve them as much as possible, given their short life span due to their exposure to the elements of nature.
