According to sources, President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former Bush administration official Elaine Chao as his transportation secretary, a position likely to take on tremendous importance in light of Trump’s intention to invest billions in rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure.
As transportation secretary, Chao, a former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), would oversee the massive program Trump pledged he would launch to “make America great again,” including the rebuilding of bridges, roads and other infrastructure.
Chao was the first Asian American female cabinet member in U.S. history, and served as labor secretary during President George W. Bush’s entire eight-year administration. Should the Senate confirm her, her presence would add much-needed diversity to a Trump cabinet that has been criticized by some as consisting mostly of older white men.
The news of Chao’s nomination was first reported by Politico.
