Turkey: Ancient mosaics ruined by horrible restoration attempts

A real crime against history

At least 10 ancient mosaics held in the second largest mosaic museum in the world in Antioch, Turkey, suffered irreparable damages during restoration efforts.

According to Hurriyet newspaper, the scandal of the destruction of these 2nd century mosaics broke out after a local restorer, Mehmet Daşkapan, reported it to a local newspaper. According to Daşkapan some of these mosaics are now in a horrible state and have completely lost their artistic and historic value.

The destroyed mosaics include, amongst others a depiction of Isaac’s sacrifice, and an image of Narcissus.
