UK Paralympics canoe champion banned after re-evaluation of her condition proves she is OK

Could be stripped of her world champion medal

Charlotte Wilkinson Burnette has been in a wheelchair for 4 years, and even though she was part of the UK Paralympics squad the UK federation banned her from taking part in the Games, as it was revealed the cause of her problem was not physical inability but psychological. The 23-year old canoe athlete who is world champion and one of the favourites for gold in the 2016 Rio Games in Brazil, was ‘chopped’ from the British team after the federation accepted the recommendation of the medical team that her condition was not related to physical inabilities but to psychological factors. Charlotte had broken a vertebra in a bath accident 4 years ago, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. After the initial diagnosis doctors said her problem was of a psychological nature, which means her participation violates the regulations, as only athletes with severe physical limitations are eligible to take part in the Paralympics.
