Russian President Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro referred to the Greek referendum on Sunday, taking a distinctly more positive view that most European leaders.
Putin expressed his support for the Greek people in overcoming the country’s current difficulties, a Kremlin statement read, while noting that the Russian leader spoke with Greek PM Alexis Tsipras earlier in the day.
According to Moscow, the call was made after a Tsipras’ initiative, with talks touching on the referendum, creditors’ demands for a deal with Athens and even bilateral cooperation, i.e. a natgas pipeline.
Cuba’s iconic communist leader up until 2008, Fidel Castro, was also gushing in Tweeting about the Greek referendum results and even harking back to Greece’s wartime resistance to Axis forces.
Finally, on the “venceremos front”, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro extended his congratulations towards the Greek people for voting ‘No’ in Sunday’s referendum. “We consider it our victory, and that of the brave people of Latin America”, he said.
