Residents of Lesvos are alarmed over information that construction of a new hotspot on the Aegean island is under way. Video footage of ongoing construction work at the deserted military outpost of Lemonou, has raised concern among the local population. Lesvos, which already hosts 5,594 refugees and migrants, has been feeling the pressures of a steady rise of people crossing from Turkey into Greek territory, especially after the failed coup attempt in Turkey. Despite reassurances made by Deputy Migration Minister Giannis Mouzalas that the government plans to decongest the islands in the eastern Aegean islands from the increasing number of refugees by dispersing them throughout Greece, a video posted on lesvosnews.gr, clearly shows preparations are underway for the erection of a new refugee centre. Bulldozers can be seen tearing down parts of the old outpost.
