Weather: Dust concentrations, heat, and mud showers – Easter forecast

Weather forecasts for Holy Week

Saharan dust is heading towards Greece with high concentrations of dust that will limit visibility. Mud showers are expected, mainly in the northern and western parts of the country. Tomorrow  winds will be turning westward towards the Dodecanese and gradually easing into the east.

According to Thodoris Kolydas today Foehn-type winds will be blowing increasing temperatures.

There will be strong winds where temperatures may differ or even be  greater than 16°C between Northwestern Greece and the Southern Aegean regions, especially in cases of south winds.

Today’s forecast

There will be temperature differences between northern and southern regions of Greece, highlighting variances of up to 16°C.  Today in Heralkion Crete temperatures will be 28°C and 11-12°C in the northwest. The weather forecast for today includes clouds, mainly rain in western and northern areas, thunderstorms in the west, and increased Saharan dust leading to limited visibility and mud showers. Temperatures vary across regions, with winds at sea reaching up to 6 Beaufort. Today in Attica clouds are expected with a chance of light rain. Dust concentrations in the atmosphere will be relatively high. Winds will blow from the southeast at 4-5 Beaufort, turning northwest in the evening. Temperatures will range from 17 to 25 degrees Celsius. In Thessaloniki occasional showers are expected with relatively increased concentrations of dust. Winds will blow from variable directions at 3-4 Beaufort with temperatures ranging between 13 to 19 degrees Celsius.

Easter weather forecast 

The weather for Easter is expected to be volatile. According to meteorological model forecasts, both during Holy Week and towards its end – namely Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday chances are of rain.

Meteorologist Klearhos Marousakis: chances of rain and bad weather 

According to Klearhos Marousakis there are chances of seeing bad weather together with rain. There is also a possibility heading into Holy Saturday, there will be another wave of bad weather with rain and temperatures lower and closer to normal for the season. Temperatures are expected to range around 23 to 24 degrees Celsius with storms around noon.

Arniakos: Possibility of light rain and showers 

ANT1’s meteorologist Tassos Arniakos emphasised that there is a possibility of rain showers on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, whereas Sunday the possibility of rain is higher especially in the mainland and mountainous regions. Weather on Easter Sunday will be as it is every year he noted.

Giannopoulos: Until Labour Day there won’t be significant rainfalls 

ERT’s  meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos expressed that temperatures will range between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius, and until Labour Day without significant rainfalls

Nikos Kanderes: Changes in weather is highly unlikely

Nikos Kanderes stated that according to the weather conditions of previous years, 2023-1973, the weather forecast for Easter Sunday in Athens will have temperatures varying between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius, without expected rainy conditions until Labour Day. For Thessaloniki temperatures will be around 23 degrees Celsius. Kanderes explained that temperature during the month of May are volatile mostly with thunderstorms, lightning and hail.

Kolydas: Temperatures will remain stable 

According to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas temperature variations will be noticed at the lower levels of the atmosphere (at the 850 hPa level, at a height of 1500m above the surface) that indicate a temperature drop from Thursday. The weather is due to be mild  heading towards Easter.
