The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government fears that efforts are being made to undermine a deal between Greece and its creditors so as to prevent Greece from getting access to funds from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). The Greek government leadership is concerned that an accident may take place, sending Greece on a course towards a Grexit.

Government sources estimate that Greece will be safe from a Grexit only once a new deal is struck, however there hardliners’ are doing all they can to prevent this with foreign negotiators taking advantage of the country’s predicament by loading the already tough austerity program with new measures.

The government has given assurances that it will do all it can to ensure that a deal will be struck despite the International Monetary Fund pointing to problems of a technical nature.

Dissent within SYRIZA

Meanwhile, there are obstacles that the SYRIZA party needs ot overcome within its own ranks. Former energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, that heads SYRIZA’s Left Platform, has taken part in a number of interviews to state his support form the government’s application of the bailout program while also calling on the government to respond to the proud ‘no’ to bailouts and austerity that the Greek people had stated during the July 5 referendum.

Former social security minister Dimitris Stratoulis warns that the “hosanna in the highest of Palm Sunday” could easily be turned into a “Crucifixion” once the social consequences of the memorandum become evident.
