Is anti-semitism in Greece highest amongst EU countries?

Stereotypes are firmly entrenched in Greeks who blame the Jews for their woes

Some 10,000 Greeks were polled in June 2015 by the Anti-Defamation League, and the results were shocking, with 90% of respondents agreeing with the statement “Jews have too much power in the business world” and 85% agreeing that “Jews have too much power in international finance markets.”

Roughly 70% said that “Jews still talk too much about what happened to them in the Holocaust” and 51% said that Jews don’t care about what happens to anyone but their own kind.”

Attitudes in the country, if based only on survey results, would show it surpassing Iran and slightly behind Turkey as far as anti-Semitic views are concerned. In total, 67% of Greek respondents agreed with the majority of a list of anti-Semitic statements included in the survey. France and Germany have noted a decrease in anti-Semitic attitudes following the recent attacks on Jews.

Despite the high anti-semitism recorded in Greece, the country has rarely if ever witnessed anti-Jewish violence that has cropped up in other “friendlier” countries, with Greeks preferring to express their anger against Jews as bigotry without violence. Stereotypes prevail with a majority of 11 statements.

Moreover, there were countless of instances of non-Jews during the Nazi occupation coming to the aid of Greek Jews, especially the anti-occupation partisans and resistance.

The poll is a follow-up to a 2014 Global 100 survey and shows widespread anti-Semitism among Muslims across Europe.  CLICK HERE to see the results.
