2014 World Rowing Coastal Championships to be held in beautiful Thessaloniki

The opening ceremony will take place on October 16, at the City Hall

The 2014 World Rowing Coastal Championships will be held along the beautiful coastline of Thessaloniki from October 17-19.

Coastal rowing, which was introduced in the official categories of the World Rowing Federation in the last decade, is becoming increasingly popular and exciting for the spectators.

According to estimates, the number of the athletes participating in this year’s world championships, organized by the City of Thessaloniki, the Greek Rowing Federation and the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Development Agency will reach 500. More than 23 countries will be represented in the event.

The opening ceremony will take place on October 16, at the City Hall and will include a performance by Composer-Thereminst May Roosevelt, inspired by Greek folk dances and a music and dance theatrical presentation of the legendary story of the “Gorgon”.

The races will take place on October 17 and 18. On Sunday October, 19 locals and visitors will have the chance to enjoy demonstration races by ‘unusual crews’.

Mr. Yiannis Boutaris, Mayor of Thessaloniki and President of the Organizing Committee of the 2014 World Rowing Coastal Championships said that the “the organization of the World Coastal Rowing Championships in the heart of the city combines and highlights this very face of Thessaloniki, the face of a city that brings dynamic and youthful voices into the spotlight, promotes the sporting spirit and showcases modern Thessaloniki, a creative city that moves forward.”
