“Rarely is history reflected so clearly to a monument as it is to Spinalonga, a small rocky island at the northern entrance of the Elounda bay. It is described very aptly as an historical “palimpsest”. It has played many roles. It was a fortified fortress of ancient Olous, a place of resistance against the Arab invaders, a rare example of venetian bastion, a refuge and base of “Chainides”, exile and prison during the Ottoman occupation, an Ottoman settlement from the early 19th century until 1904, a leprosarium, and now an attraction that is candidate for UNESCO World heritage Site” PhD of the University of Ioannina, Manolis Makrakis, says in the foreword of the album “Spinalonga: Through my eyes”.
The photo album was an idea of Gina Xanthaki, who wanted to capture the unique beauty of the rocky island, and it was realized by the photographer Yannis Tzortzis.
The album contains snapshots from different times of day and night , with the light of dawn or moon , rain or storms. Also, short texts by Nikos Kazantzakis are included enriching the amazing photographic content.
