Investigating judges handling the cases of the waiving of immunity for Golden Dawn MPsare requesting the speeding up of procedures from the Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the House Christos Markogiannakis.
It should be noted that the file has been forwarded to the House on February 20th demanding the lifting of immunity of 16 members of the far-right party for crimes relating the establishment and direction of a criminal organization, possession of weapons, etc.
However, the process, so far, has only progressed for five members of the Golden Dawn MPs so the investigating judges pointing out that there are 29 pre-trial detainees and that the trial should be completely within 18 months.
On the other hand Mr. Markogiannakis sent a written reply, pointing out that for the 5 MPs, the House has ruled and has placed them in the disposal of justice. He notes that in order for the continuance of the motion, there must be a Conference of Presidents and that if the immunity is lifted, they will be directly notified.
However, even if the issue is the responsibility of the Parliament President’s office, it should be noted that the government does not seem willing to place it before a Parliament vote before European MP elections.
