Conchita revealed

From the fish processing plant to the first place in Eurovision - The bearded drag queen’s long road towards recognition – His love for Greek music and Anna Vissi

Newsroom May 11 10:44

“For me, my dream came true. But for society it showed me that people want to move on, to look to the future. We said something, we made a statement.” This was Conchita Wurst’s first statement at the Press Conference that followed his triumphant victory in the 59th Eurovision Song Contest held in Copenhagen, Denmark with the song “Rise Like A Phoenix”.

The drag queen, who was one of the favorites of the musical contest since the very beginning, managed to impress with her unusual appearance the 11,000 spectators who had gathered at the B&W Hallerne arena in Copenhagen and gather a total of 290 points, winning the first place.

But who is really the person who sent the audience at B&W Hallerne arena into frenzy?

Thomas “Tom” Neuwirth, as is the true name of Conchita Wurst, is a professional decorator and his country views him is “as a symbol of tolerance and artistic freedom”.

The singer, who identifies as gender neutral, was born on October 6, 1988 in Austria. She is a woman trapped in a male body with gorgeous long hair and perfect lashes, with sensual voice and impeccable style and also with… a beard.

The singer appeared for the first time in drag as the character Conchita Wurst in a reality show in 2011. She left everyone speechless singing Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”.

In the same reality show she admitted her love for Greek music, especially Anna Vissi whom she adores. There’s proof for that: A video has been released showing Conchita Wurst singing Anna Vissi’s song entitled “Everything I do”, with which Anna took part in the competition in 2006, winning the ninth place.

It should be noted however that this is not the first controversial appearance in Eurovision history. Israeli transsexual Dana International won the song contest in 1998.
