Greece is expected to attract a large number of Australians that will visit Gallipoli next April in order to participate in the events for the 100th anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand’s soldiers (ANZAC) landing at Gallipoli in 1915. The failed offensive by the allies ended in the soldiers’ massacre by the Turkish troops.

The campaign was the first major military action of Australia and New Zealand as independent dominions, and is considered by many to mark the birth of national consciousness in those nations.

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni said that Greece would seek to promote its role in Gallipoli’s military campaign.
Areas where Australian soldiers fought in WWI and WWII will be particularly promoted with special focus on Limnos island where an Allied Cemetery exists.
