Mr Alexis Tsipras, the leader of the main opposition party in Greece, surprised many people with his opinion on the issue of the election of a new president in the European Commission. Denying those who criticize SYRIZA of anti-European attitude, Mr Tsipras seems to make a clear and unambiguous European choice, despite the differences he has with his political opponents. He responds to the major problem of the European Union, which is the gap between the directors of Brussels and the citizens, with “greater participation in Europe”.

During the meetings he had with the other fellow candidates for the presidency of the European Commission Mr Tsipras was absolutely clear and conciliatory. The new head of the European Commission must be one of those proposed before the elections and European citizens voted for – he was a candidate of the Party of the European Left.

“I disagree politically with Mr Juncker, but I respect the election result” Mr.Tsipras said, while according to rumours Mrs. Merkel has proposed Christine Lagarde to be the president of the Commission – later she refuted these rumours stating that she supports Juncker’s candidacy.

Mr Tsipras wanted to clarify that he wants Left to have a strong role and not left aside watching the others deciding. Indeed, the discussions that took place in Brussels was his policy initiative.
