Philip VI, the future king of Spain is preparing to ascend to the throne after his father’s abdication. He will be vowing into office before parliament, without the presence of foreign country delegations.
Before the inauguration of the new king, Parliament will have to approve a law authorizing the abdication of 76 year old Juan Carlos. In the Lower House, the vote is expected to take place on June 11th, whereas the Senate will vote on June 18th.
A representative of the palace said: “Tradition in Spain requires that the abdication as well as a king’s enthronement is made before MPs and senators”, noting that “there will be no foreign delegations attending”.
After the swearing in there will be a military parade but not a religious ceremony. The latter was done during Juan Carlos’ ascendance to the throne on November 22nd, 1975, two days after dictator Francisco Franco’s death.
The new king and his wife, Queen Leticia, will perform a tour in Spain, France, Morocco and Portugal, among other countries which they plan to visit.
