The journalist trying to describe the current situation in Greece mentions examples of how people with no insurance are striving to receive medical treatment in hospitals and the indifference of government authorities for those who are in need.
The spokesman of the Greek metropolitan clinic, Christos Sideris, talked about the current health systems and said that the clinic treats the most desperate citizens. “The clinic only accepts the poor and unemployed, people who have no insurance, those on low wages and pensions, all ages and sexes and even former industrialists who have fallen from financial highs,” he said. “Neoliberal ideology is putting money above people’s lives.”
The journalist also mentions the corruption and shadow economy, noting that according to the Transparency International, the Greece has the most corrupt public service in Europe, whereas according to the Institute of Economic Affairs, the shadow economy in Greece in 2012 reached 24 % of GDP.
Also, the journalist refers to the discontent of the Greeks since government sells off the public assets and to Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek by saying that “I find myself agreeing with Slavoj Žižek, who argues that only a radicalised left can save Europe, including Greece, from slipping deeper into the morass of a populist, anti-refugee right”.
