The Counterterrorist Squad has intensified efforts to locate Paula Roupa – the partner of recently jailed terrorist Nikos Maziotis – after her provocative letter to website indymedia stating that she would not surrender and threatens to continued the armed struggle in Greece. The 45-year-old’s message has increased fears that she will proceed in a new attack as her announcement clearly indicates her intention to continue urban guerilla fighting with the organization Revolutionary Struggle.
The police scoured her apartment on Michail Voda Street but found no traces that could lead to Roupa’s whereabouts, however investigations showed that the terrorist group changes its location every six months as a precautionary measure. Parallel to this, it became clear that the organization has an impressive way of helping fugitives “disappear” without a trace.
Initially, Maziotis’ arrest was expected to lead to the group’s weapons base, however these hopes have been dashed as members of the group had already mapped out a plan of what to do in the case of their leader’s arrest that immediately swang into action.
On July 16, police had expected that Roupa would use the family car, a Hyundai Accent, to hide around regions of Marathona and Nea Makri or Kiato and Akrata. The car was never found and it is believed that it is locked up in some garage at an unknown place under a six-month lease and will possibly turn up after the lease has run out. The police believe that it is possible that Roupa is still in Athens.
During the two years that Maziotis and Roupa were sought after, they managed to reorganize the terrorist organization with new people. One of these, George Petrakakos became Maziotis’ right-hand man and is believed to be the current leader of the group along with Roupa. Following the note to indymedia, the police believe that Roupa is the “brains” behind the organization and the author of all the group’s letters during past strikes.
