In an announcement released on Tuesday, main opposition SYRIZA’s economic policy department accuses the government of using a “bank-centered” approach to managing Greece’s private debt problem.

SYRIZA criticized the government’s decision to give banks absolute control and jurisdiction to decide whether businesses should be restructured, without the intervention of a single development ministry service.

Commenting on press reports concerning measures for non-performing loans, the main opposition’s economic policy department underlined that banks could decide the rapid liquidation of businesses in financial difficulties, without employing objective criteria and with no consideration of whether the businesses involved can be included in a plan for the productive reorganization of the country, or in order to protect jobs and fight unemployment.

In reality, SYRIZA claimed, the measures amounted to a plan to plunder private property since many businesses that will be judged non-viable at the discretion of banks will be forced into liquidation or the sale of part or all of their assets.
