Would you ever consider eating a lollipop that contains, instead of a candy or a chewing gum, a dead scorpion, a worm or another edible insect?
The lollipops in question are definitely original and certainly not suitable for kids! The scorpion lollipop craze is an international phenomenon that arrived recently in Thessaloniki, with the initiative of Yorgos Matanakis and Yannis Hadjis. The two cousins decided to import these strange products as a result of the economic crisis.
“We realized that we didn’t want to work for peanuts for another company. We wanted to create a business of our own,” they told thestival.gr.
The scorpion lollipops are available in strawberry and banana flavors and the worm lollipop is tequila flavored. The products have been approved by the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET).
