The marble sphinxes in Amphipolis were totally revealed

Parts of the wings of the Sphinxes were also found during the excavations.

Newsroom August 20 03:57

According to a Culture Ministry announcement that was released on Wednesday, there have been new developments in the archaeological excavations conducted in the area of Amphipolis, including the total uncover of the marble Sphinxes found at the Kasta Hill and the finding of a part of the back of the Lion of Aphipolis as well a small part of the superstructure of the monument.

The announcement stated that after the removal of eleven stones from the sealing wall, the Sphinxes which are made of Thassos marble were totally revealed. The sculptures’ height is 1.45m. Their total height with the head would have reached approximately two meters. The plasticity and intricate work of the sculptures which were created in the last quarter of the fourth century BC is apparent on their torsos.

Parts of the wings of the Sphinxes were also found during the excavations. This discovery will allow, according to sources, their full restoration.

The archaeologists also found a part of the Lion of Amphipolis back, which led them to the conclusion that both the Sphinxes and the Lion were made at the same workshop.
