Protesting against the bill on property disposals, with the slogan “The Society reacts and claims” made 20 trade professional and social organizations, outside the Presidential Palace in Lefkosia.
On his part, the Cypriot president Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis invited the heads of organizations to meet him and to hand over the result of the protest vote, as well as to express in person the reasons for their disagreement with the disposals.
At the same time, the new Cypriot government began intensive efforts to ensure parliamentary support for the adoption of the relevant legislation, while only five days are left to debate the issue in parliament.
Faced with the risk of voting against the bill and the non-disbursement of the next tranche of international lenders in early September, Mr. Anastasiadis called today the leader of the Democratic Party Mr. Nikolas Papadopoulos on the presidential palace and the leader of the European Party Mr. Dimitris Syllouris for urgent talks.
Tomorrow Mr. Anastasiadis will meet the President of EDEK Mr. Giannaki Omirou.
The contacts were intensified following the decision of the Executive Office of the Democratic Party to vote against the bill as it stands.
According to reports, after the existing contact Mr. Anastasiadis reportedly believes that there is room to find consensus. He recognizes that the parties have the right to propose changes, but stresses that they must be such that they can benefit from the approval of the troika.
According to the same information, government and opposition parties agreed that the Law on disposals should be linked to the insolvency legislation, which will provide protection to small borrowers, particularly in the first house and the roof of small businesses, but there seem to be different opinions as to the manner of interconnection.
The Democratic Party, of which eight seats in parliament are crucial for the result, believes that networking is not enough to be temporal, but essential. That is not considered sufficient to delay the enforcement of divestments by 2015, so by then voting for the insolvency law will have taken place, but calls for an explicit provision in the law that the law will not apply if hasn’t previously be voted the safety net of primary residence .
The government, through the government spokesman, confirmed that the bills for divestments proposed in Parliament, provide opportunities for borrowers to protect themselves without having the prior adoption of other measures. But acknowledged that there is room in the debate on the bills, for the parties to express their concerns and worries, in order to provide the best possible framework for the protection of borrowers.
