According to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, one of the two British exploration ships of the legendary master John Franklin, which went missing in the Arctic 160 years ago, was found.
He further reported that it is unknown so far which of the two vessels it is, however, is certainly one of them. The historical discovery was made by a Canadian divers team and archaeologists which have been conducting research since 2008.
The two ships, ‘Terror’ and ‘Erebus’, had set sail in 1845 with a mission to find the Northwest Passage, since the identification of the sea passage which would have connected the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic ice had become Franklin’s obsession.
However, they never completed their mission and never returned to their base. Since then they have been considered to be one of the most sought-after shipwrecks worldwide.
During the period from 1848 to 1859 several expeditions were made to the Arctic to find Franklin and his team. Investigations, which eventually resulted in the discovery of the Northwest Passage.
