Greece’s “Little England” enters Oscars race

Greek blockbuster submitted as Best Foreign-Language Film Category for 2015

Newsroom September 10 12:11

Director Pantelis Voulgaris’ box-office sensation, “Little England” (Mikra Anglia), has been submitted by Greece for this year’s Academy Awards. The Greek period drama that is vying for an Oscar in the Best Foreign-Language Film Category for 2015 at the 87th Academy Awards has already scooped several international prizes, including the grand prize at the Shanghai International Film Festival. In Greece, it won six trophies at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards including that of Best Picture.

The movie, scripted by Ioanna Karistiani and based on her best-selling “The Jasmine Isle”, the director’s wife, details the tale of two sisters in love with the same young merchant. The backdrop is the idyllic Cycladic island of Andros during turbulent times in the 1930s and 1940s when the island’s men had to forge a living by sailing around the world. The movie details how the community copes without its men.
