Reuters: Premature exit from the Memorandum is a major risk for Greece

European partners might be willing to help Athens

Newsroom September 26 06:51

According to an article by Reuters the Greek governments intention for an early exit from the memorandum, is due to fear of an impending political judgment.
The article supports that the Greek Prime Minister needs “desperately” a new story in order to ensure the support of 180 MPs’ in the upcoming elections for the new President of the Republic, under the increased pressure by the anti-memorandum leftists.
Further, the article refers to a high risk bet for the course of the Greek economy as well as the relationship between Athens and its Eurozone partners. Characteristically writes that:” “A possible failure by Mr. Antonis Samaras to succeed in the election of the chosen prestigious person for the position of President of the Republic would lead to new elections, in which his opponents almost certainly would win” .
The writer continues by making reference to the Greek Prime Minister’s visit in Berlin, which for the first time he spoke publicly of Athen’s hope for an early termination of the aid package from the EU and the IMF amounting to 240 million euro, a year earlier than its scheduled finish date, the beginning of 2006.
Finally, according to Reuters source who is well aware of the ongoing discussions ” This move has a political based logic. Is not the IMF that is pressing to leave, but the government”.
