A 24-year-old Syrian philosophy student was arrested at an airport near the Belgian city of Charleroi on suspicion of being an Islamic militant. The young man had passed through Athens and was traveling on a fake passport.
New York, United States
Warnings by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi concerning information on a plot to be carried out by Islamic State militants at the Paris and New York subways prompted U.S. Commissioner William J. Bratton to ride an express train as an effort to showcase the system’s safety. “There is no immediate credible threat to our subway system,” said New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Manila, Philippines
Local rebels known as the Abu Sayyaf Islamic terrorist group are threatening to kill two German captives due to Germany’s support of the U.S.-led military campaign against Islamic State. The small Philippine Islamist rebel group posted an online statement on Tuesday demanding a ransom of $5.6 million and that Germany stop its support of the campaign against ISIS. A spokeswoman for the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday that her office was working to free the hostages.
