The best places in Athens for night owls

Remember: In Greece the early bird may get the worm, but the night owl gets all the fun!

Newsroom September 27 10:36

Famous for its original and vibrant nightlife, Greece is an ideal destination for those who wish to leave all worries behind, let their hair down and have a blast during their vacation. Night lasts longer in Greece and the Greek “kefi” (the spirit of joy, passion and enthusiasm of the locals) is guaranteed to offer you unforgettable moments.

As expected, Greece’s capital, Athens, holds the reigns of this superb nightlife. And although it is possible to have a great time in practically every neighborhood – Greeks are famous for their impromptu parties – the following areas offer a vast range of options that will please even the most seasoned ‘party animal’.

And remember: In Greece the early bird may get the worm, but the night owl gets all the fun!

• Gazi
This Athens’ hotspot has everything: Great traditional tavernas, restaurants of international cuisine, pop, (hard) rock, mainstream, swing and retro, gay and lesbian bars and clubs, galleries and fringe theatres!

• Plaka
In this traditional part of the city, which is located right at the foot of the Acropolis hill, time seems to have stopped at the 19th century. Visit a Greek tavern to enjoy folk music and dancing as well as delicious “meze” dishes.

• Monastiraki and Psirri
Right next to Thissio, this wide area offers low, picturesque buildings, narrow cobbled streets, a flea market and very few cars. Here you will find a variety of alternative bars, old-fashioned cafes, Greek tavernas and shops of all kinds. Some of the restaurants also offer live Greek music.

• Kolonaki
Apart from the numerous branches of famous boutiques, the business area of Athens offers stylish bars and gourmet restaurants for all tastes. Here you will also find many art galleries.

Caffe-Da-Capo

• Exarhia
The rock side of the city, where students, young people and alternative crowds come to have a drink and socialize in inexpensive restaurants and bars.

• Syntagma
The cobbled narrow roads in the area around Syntagma offer many options for night owls: Romvis, Kolokotroni and Thiseos streets are full of bars where you can enjoy a cocktail and dance until the small hours.
