A guide to Greek drinks

Want to boost your spirits and find out the secret of the Greek “kefi” (spirit of joy)? Have a glass of these six drinks!

Newsroom October 1 09:37

In ancient Greek mythology, Nectar, the beverage of the gods, conferred immortality on those who tasted it and, for that reason, its theft was considered a very serious offence that deserved a severe punishment.

Thankfully, the contemporary versions of nectar are far more accessible to those who want to try them and feel immortal, albeit for a few hours. And modern day Greeks –mortals, that is – will be more than happy to share a glass with you and wish you “stin ygeia sas!” (cheers).

Want to boost your spirits and find out the secret of the Greek “kefi” (spirit of joy)?
Have a glass of these six drinks and remember: never mix, never worry!

Rakomelo

Rakomelo is produced from Tsipouro/Tsikoudia sweetened with honey. A variety of herbs and grains, such as cinnamon, clove, anise and many more are added to the sweet drink to create an aroma that soothes the senses. Rakomelo is produced on the island of Crete and other islands of the Aegean Sea, as well as in the Greek mainland and it is mainly consumed during wintertime.

Tsipouro/Tsikoudia

Tsipouro/Tsikoudia is an authentic Greek product with close ties to the Greek lifestyle. It is produced by the distillation of grape marc. High-quality grapes are integral to the production of high quality Tsipouro. Other factors that play a crucial role in terms of the end-product are the composition of the vineyard’s soil, its altitude and the cultivation practices.

Tentura

Tentura is a delicious liqueur that owes its characteristic taste, aroma and color to the extracts of spices it contains, including cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Tentura is traditionally produced in Greece and its name probably stems from the Latin word tinctura, a word used to describe its sharp, characteristic color.

Mastiha of Chios

The liqueur known as Mastiha is the product of the distillation of genuine mastic. It is traditionally produced on the beautiful island of Chios and, according to local tradition, it can be served accompanied by a dessert after each meal or alongside coffee.

Ouzo

Ouzo is a spirit drink containing anise, exclusively produced in Greece. It can be consumed neat or mixed with water, in which case it turns cloudy white and reveals a totally different character. It is considered by many the most sociable drink ever created, as it is perfect for sharing with friends and it makes a wonderful accompaniment to seafood and other “meze” dishes.
