A lengthy article allegedly written by British hostage John Cantlie was printed in the Islamic State magazine, Dabiq. The photojournalist’s supposed article is titled “The Real Story Behind My Videos” and is illustrated with a photograph of 43-year-old Mr. Cantlie in his orange outfit.
The article – published online – refers to several propaganda videos that featured Mr. Cantlie that were released by IS militants over the last few weeks. In the article that Mr. Cantlie has allegedly written on his own, he insists that the scripts in the videos are his own. The videos with the Arabic subtitles are, according to Mr. Cantlie, written by himself after being suggested initial titles and handed to the mujahidin who suggests copy changes.
He writes:
“It’s all very fast – the first eight videos were written, approved and filmed in just 12 days – but the mujahidin are like that. In quick, get the job done, move on to the next task.”
In the article, Mr. Cantlie describes himself as a “nobody going nowhere.” He says he is content to be in a “clean and comfortable room”. He urges the British government to negotiate his release.
He writes:
“Four of my cellmates have already been executed by the Islamic State in the most visceral way possible after the British and American governments apparently made a joint decision not to discuss terms for our release with our captors. And now, unless something changes very quickly and very radically, I await my turn.”
Mr. Cantlie was captured alongside beheaded photojournalist James Foley in Sheikh in November 2012.
