Amal Alamuddin: Greek friends, sealed lips and the Parthenon Marbles

The prospect of having lawyer Amal Alamuddin Clooney in Greece to champion the return of the Parthenon Marbles has made Greeks lose their marbles!

Newsroom October 13 09:57

36-year-old Amal Ramzi Alamuddin is not one to blab prefering instead to rely on actions rather than words. Most of what we know about the discreet London-based British-Lebanese lawyer, author, activist, Doughty Street Chamber barrister and new Mrs. Clooney has come from sources surrounding her rather than herself. It was actually her Greek friend, award-winning Phedon Papamichael that had first mentioned that she would be coming to Greece to advise the government on the return of the Parthenon Marbles. Back then he had said that she would be in Greece on September 11, however the change of date has only served to make the visit an even greater cause for Greek euphoria.

Athens-born Mr. Papamichael is just one of Ms. Alamuddin’s Greek friends. She also works with Andreas Michaelides, head of finances at Doughty Street Chambers, who no doubt have encouraged the young lawyer to join the team taking on the challenge of pursuing the Parthenon Marbles for Greece.

Mrs. Alamuddin’s recruitment to the case for the return of the Parthenon Marbles casts actor George Clooney’s seemingly off-cuff statements about the return of the marbles in February in a different light. Back then, the still eligible bachelor, appeared to have stumbled into the debate while promoting “The Monuments Man”. He had said back then he had looked into the matter, however Ms. Alamuddin had been involved in the issue since 2011.

Back then, Australian archaeologist David Hill, chair of the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles , asked cultural heritage issues lawyer Norman Palmer to explore whether Greece had gorunds for legal recourse. Mr. Palmer in turn swayed Australian Geoffrey Robertson, one of the biggest names in international cases such as this one, to join the team and so began investigations into British law and possible Greek options. The association of Doughty Street Chambers and Ms. Alamuddin’s Greek friends made it only a matter of time before her involvement in the case.

These top lawyers are the best in their field, however it will be Ms. Alamuddin that will steal the limelight during their tour of the Acropolis, meetings with Prime Minister Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos as well as Culture Minister Costas Tasoulas and other officials.
