The Municipality of Kalambaka on the north-western edge of the Plain of Thessaly, Greece, will soon be known as the “Municipality of Meteora,” according to a decision that was taken recently by the city council.
The decision for the name change was based on the fact that the majority of professionals in the tourism industry know the destination as “Meteora” and not as “Kalambaka”. This “rebranding” of the destination is expected to increase tourism in the region.
Kalambaka town with a population of 12,000 is situated on the foot of the massive detached stone pinnacles that are home to Meteora Monasteries, one of Christianity’s holiest places as well as a landscape of outstanding natural beauty.
Thousands of visitors flock to this unique place every year, attracted by the daunting size of the rock formations where timelessness and beauty prevail.
Nature lovers should not miss the opportunity to hike through winding stone paths and admire this stunning geological phenomenon formed as a result of a chain of erosions and geological changes over a period of 15 million years.
It should be noted that in 1988 Metéora was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
